My Husband Humiliated Me on Our Wedding—Now I’m Questioning Our Future

I always dreamed of my wedding day being magical—filled with love, laughter, and respect. But instead, I stood frozen in my white dress as my new husband turned our ceremony into a cruel joke. Right after our vows, he grabbed the mic and launched into a stand-up routine, mocking my dress, my family, and even our relationship. The guests laughed. I didn’t. I felt exposed, ridiculed, and deeply betrayed.

He said it was “just a prank,” that he wanted to lighten the mood. But there was nothing light about the way he imitated my father’s accent or joked about my weight. I had begged him before the wedding not to do anything embarrassing. He promised. And then he broke that promise in front of everyone I love.

Later, when I confronted him, he brushed it off. “You’re too sensitive,” he said. “Everyone thought it was hilarious.” But I wasn’t looking for laughs—I was looking for love, for partnership, for someone who would protect my dignity, not tear it down for applause.

I started replaying our relationship in my head. The subtle digs, the “jokes” at my expense, the way he always needed to be the center of attention. I realized this wasn’t new—it was just the most public version of a pattern I’d ignored for too long. And now, I couldn’t unsee it.

Friends told me to forgive him, that weddings are stressful and people act out. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t about nerves—it was about control. About showing me, and everyone else, that he could humiliate me and still expect me to smile through it. That’s not love. That’s power.

So now I’m sitting with the question I never thought I’d ask so soon after saying “I do”: Did I marry someone who truly respects me? Because if the answer is no, then maybe walking away is the bravest vow I’ll ever make.
