Katie Zacharia had barely begun her new job as White House press secretary when her first briefing became a talking point in Washington. While Donald Trump reacted to her performance, experts watching her closely noticed details that raised questions about how confidently she handled her first major test.
On October 13, Zacharia stepped behind the White House briefing room podium for the first time, facing reporters just one day after beginning her new role. What followed was a short appearance that combined a lengthy defense of Trump’s record, a handful of questions, and several moments that would later draw attention from body language specialists.
A 14-Minute Briefing Filled With Praise for Trump
Zacharia began by expressing her gratitude to Trump and emphasizing her enthusiasm for working with him and the American people. “I’m so honored to work for President Trump and the American people as the new White House press secretary,” she said in her opening remarks.
The new press secretary then launched into an extensive account of the administration’s claimed accomplishments, discussing wages, prescription drug prices, employment, energy production, investments, and border security.
She also praised Trump’s political rallies, describing the enthusiasm surrounding his appearances as unprecedented and pointing to a recent event in Youngstown, Ohio, as an example of his momentum ahead of the midterm elections.
Zacharia’s opening remarks lasted approximately eight minutes, leaving only about six minutes for questions during a briefing that would ultimately last around 14 minutes.
Her appearance was particularly notable because she had just entered one of the most demanding communications jobs in American politics, with the midterm elections approaching and the administration facing questions from reporters about its policies and decisions.
Only Three Reporters Got to Ask Questions
After finishing her prepared remarks, Zacharia called on reporters from Breitbart, Fox News, and the Daily Mail. The questions covered the administration’s approach to new media, Trump’s upcoming campaign travel, the relationship between the White House’s messaging and Republican election prospects, and the future of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
When asked whether the White House planned to continue expanding access for new media outlets, Zacharia praised her predecessor, Karoline Leavitt, and said the administration intended to maintain the new media seat and expand it where possible.
She also indicated that Trump would continue his campaign appearances, mentioning upcoming stops in Georgia, Kentucky, and Florida. The most consequential announcement came when a reporter asked about Guilfoyle, who had reportedly been facing questions about her position for months.
“We have asked ambassador Gilfoil to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia said, according to the briefing. The announcement added a significant development to an otherwise brief appearance, but the new press secretary’s handling of the questions was not the only aspect of the briefing that attracted attention.
One Awkward Slip Became an Early Talking Point
One of Zacharia’s most noticeable moments came when she was discussing her family and explaining how she intended to manage the demands of her new position.
The press secretary spoke warmly about her husband and four children, whose ages she listed as 12, 10, 8, and 6. She also explained that her husband had traveled to Washington with the children because two birthdays were approaching and the family wanted to celebrate together.
But while speaking about her husband, Zacharia briefly stumbled over her words and mistakenly referred to him as the president. “So, my president, excuse me, my husband,” she said before correcting herself.
The slip was brief, but it occurred during a personal exchange that was already drawing attention because of the challenge of balancing family life with one of the most visible jobs in the administration. Zacharia went on to explain that her children would remain a priority, even as she prepared to relocate to Washington and take on the demanding responsibilities of the position.
She also credited Leavitt with offering advice about balancing the job and family, while explaining that she hoped to include her children in her working life whenever possible.
Body Language Experts Flagged Her Smiling and Eye Contact
Although Zacharia’s words were largely focused on praising the administration, body language specialists who reviewed her performance saw a possible disconnect between what she was saying and how she appeared while delivering it.
In an analysis published by HuffPost, experts discussed her nervous smiling, downward gaze, and tentative vocal delivery, suggesting that her nonverbal behavior could affect how audiences perceived her authority.
“Her nervous smiling, frequent downward gaze, and tentative vocal delivery projected discomfort rather than authority,” body expert Susan Constantine said. “The disconnect between her verbal messaging and nonverbal behavior created an impression of uncertainty and insufficient preparation.”
The analysis also examined the timing of Zacharia’s smiles, particularly when she looked up from her prepared remarks. Behavioral scientist Abbie Maroño suggested that some of those expressions appeared inconsistent with the emotional content of what Zacharia was saying.
“Its timing and intensity often do not fit the emotional content of what she is saying, which makes it come across as forced,” Maroño said. “It reads as impression management: She is delivering her remarks while also visibly attending to how she presents herself to the room.”
The experts’ observations did not establish what Zacharia was feeling internally, and nerves can be difficult to separate from the pressure of a first appearance on a national stage. Still, their analysis raised questions about whether her delivery conveyed the confidence expected from someone speaking on behalf of the president.
Another Expert Said She Lacked Karoline Leavitt’s Gravitas
Florida-based body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass also assessed Zacharia’s debut in comments to the New York Post, pointing to what she described as a monotone voice and insufficient eye contact. Glass compared the new press secretary with Leavitt, whose previous performances had established a different standard in her view.
“She’s definitely no Karoline Leavitt. She had gravitas,” Glass said. “She used her tone of voice appropriately. You knew when she was angry. You knew when she was happy. You knew when she was a matter of fact. She had the range of inflection that was appropriate. … Karoline Leavitt would look at you. Again, this is the first day, so I’m going to be fair.”
Glass’s comments highlighted two aspects of public speaking that can be especially important in a White House briefing room: varying one’s vocal delivery to suit the message and maintaining eye contact while addressing questions.
However, she also acknowledged that Zacharia was making her first appearance in the role, suggesting that her performance should be judged with that context in mind.
The comparison with Leavitt was particularly striking because the new press secretary was stepping into a position that requires not only communicating administration policy but also responding to reporters under pressure.
Why Some Officials Asked Critics to Give Her Time
Not everyone inside the administration viewed Zacharia’s first appearance as a failure. One administration official acknowledged that she seemed nervous but argued that such a reaction was understandable for someone facing the national spotlight after only about a day of preparation.
“She seemed nervous, but who wouldn’t be?” the official told the New York Post shortly after the briefing. The official also pushed back against criticism of her performance, arguing that appearing before reporters in such circumstances was difficult even for people who were experienced in television appearances.
“People criticizing her are being a–holes considering she had the guts to come out and do something she’s never done before with 24 hours of prep,” the official said. “I’ve worked with a ton of people that have the idea that it’s fun to go on TV and do these things, and they all come out of the gates shaky.”
Another administration official praised Zacharia’s appearance and her decision to discuss her family, suggesting that her ability to connect her personal story with her new responsibilities could help her establish herself in the role.
“She seemed understandably nervous, but given her background, I think once she gets fully immersed in the work and comfortable with the administration’s messaging, she’ll find her footing pretty quickly.”
A person close to the White House also cautioned against drawing sweeping conclusions from one briefing, particularly when comparing Zacharia with Leavitt. “She was nervous, but I don’t think someone should be judged based on their first briefing, and it’s unfair to compare her negatively to the best press secretary [under Trump], Karoline [Leavitt].”
The differing reactions illustrated the challenge facing Zacharia: She had to establish credibility quickly while navigating expectations shaped by the person who held the position before her.
White House communications director Steven Cheung also expressed confidence in her appointment. “Katie is a fabulous and wonderful addition to the team. She is uniquely qualified and whip smart to help inform the American people about all the great things President Trump and his Administration have been doing, and she will do an incredible job as Press Secretary.”
Trump Watched Her Debut — and Had a Simple Verdict
While experts and administration insiders debated Zacharia’s performance, Trump had his own assessment to share. The president had personally prepared his new spokeswoman in the Oval Office before the briefing, according to a source cited by the New York Post.
That preparation reportedly contributed to her arriving slightly late, and Trump wanted her to use the national attention surrounding her debut to highlight his administration’s accomplishments and announce Guilfoyle’s departure.
Trump, who watched the briefing, later departed the White House with Zacharia and continued answering questions from reporters on the way to Marine One.
When a reporter asked how she had performed, the president offered a straightforward response. Trump said:
“I thought she was very good.”
His public endorsement contrasted with the concerns raised by body language specialists, although it did not necessarily mean that every person inside the White House shared his assessment.
For Zacharia, Trump’s approval was an important early signal of support as she began representing an administration whose messaging often places a premium on projecting confidence and defending the president’s record.
Zacharia’s first briefing also prompted a broader question about how long she might last in a job that has tested previous Trump administration officials.
The New York Post reported that some White House officials were already drawing comparisons between her potential tenure and that of Anthony Scaramucci, the former White House communications director whose time in the role lasted just 11 days in 2017.
The comparison does not mean Zacharia is destined to leave quickly, and the early criticism of her delivery is not proof that she will struggle with the job over time. Whether Zacharia settles into the role or continues to face questions about her delivery remains to be seen. For now, her 14-minute debut has placed her under the spotlight almost as quickly as she stepped into it.
As we previously reported, Zacharia’s rocky debut was not the only thing drawing scrutiny on her first day — questions about her professional credentials and a trail of controversial social media posts were also making headlines.
Zacharia made her White House press briefing debut on Tuesday, October 13, as she announced breaking news, including that Kimberly Guilfoyle had been asked to resign as ambassador to Greece.
But the day also brought an awkward exchange over her legal background. As Trump walked toward Marine One on Tuesday morning, a journalist called out a question about Zacharia’s credentials.
“What state did she pass the bar exam in?” the journalist asked. The reporter repeated the question, saying, “She said she’s an attorney. Where did she pass the bar exam? Which state?”
Trump stepped aside to let Zacharia respond. Through muffled audio, she appeared to say, “When I moved to China.” The exchange brought renewed attention to questions about whether Zacharia has ever been licensed to practice law in the United States.
According to an investigation by The Washington Post, journalists and legal experts have struggled to find evidence of an active or expired U.S. bar admission under her name, including her maiden name, Black.
She Has a Law Degree, but Where Is Her Bar Admission?
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University with a bachelor’s degree in 2007 and a law degree in 2011, the university confirmed to The Washington Post. Afterward, she worked as an associate on the international practice team at Zhong Lun, a law firm in Beijing, from 2011 to 2013.
Her later legal-related role was as general counsel for Fix California, a conservative nonprofit founded by Trump administration official Richard Grenell, from 2024 to 2025. The issue is not whether Zacharia attended law school. Rather, it is whether she completed the requirements necessary to be admitted to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction.
Journalist Judd Legum, who publishes the Popular Information newsletter, reviewed Zacharia’s public appearances and found at least 18 occasions on Fox News since March 2025 when she was identified as a lawyer or referred to herself using that title.
She has also used the description in interviews and on social media. During an appearance on the Greg Kelly Show on October 5, 2026, Zacharia said, “[I’m a lawyer].”
On Fox & Friends First on August 31, 2026, she argued, “[As a lawyer], the procedural steps are absolutely critical.” And during an appearance on the In Front of Us podcast on August 14, 2026, she said, “[I’m a lawyer, I went to Pepperdine, Pepperdine Law].”
Legum’s investigation found no evidence that Zacharia had passed a bar examination or been admitted to practice law in any state. His search covered all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The Washington Post conducted a separate review and likewise found no bar admission under her name.
The State Bar of California, where Zacharia resides, also said it had no record of “Kate Sharon Zacharia or Kate Sharon Black having been licensed to practice law in California.” The organization said it found no records under Zacharia’s name or nickname, either.
She was also not listed in the attorney directories for Texas or Washington, D.C., according to Popular Information.
Legal Experts Explain Why the Distinction Matters
Several legal ethics experts told The Washington Post that graduating from law school and being a licensed attorney are two different things. “A J.D. degree does not make you a lawyer,” said Stephen Gillers, a professor at New York University School of Law.
Bruce A. Green, director of the Louis Stein Center for Law and Ethics at Fordham University School of Law, agreed. “A law school graduate is just that — a law school graduate,” he said.
Green explained that a person is generally considered a lawyer or attorney after being admitted to practice law, a process that in most states requires passing a bar exam and meeting character requirements. Leonard M. Niehoff, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, also highlighted the difference between holding a law degree and being licensed to practice.
“Many, if not all, states have statutes that prohibit the unauthorized practice of law, which commonly includes falsely holding oneself out as a licensed attorney for purposes of monetary gain,” Niehoff said. “Making false or misleading statements about being licensed as an attorney therefore raises not just serious ethical issues but legal ones.”
California law also restricts people who are not authorized to practice law from presenting themselves as entitled to do so. The questions extend beyond California. Experts in Chinese law told The Washington Post that Zacharia would probably not have been admitted to the Chinese bar either, given the country’s citizenship requirements for its bar examination.
“She could not have passed the PRC [People’s Republic of China] bar exam, either, since you have to be a PRC national to take it,” said Donald C. Clarke, a professor at George Washington University Law School who specializes in Chinese law.
Clarke noted that reputable Chinese law firms can hire foreign employees to perform certain tasks without requiring them to have passed a foreign bar examination. However, those employees cannot undertake work requiring a relevant bar qualification.
The White House did not provide evidence that Zacharia had been licensed to practice law in the United States. Instead, it said she had worked on international transaction law in China and had “practiced international transactional law, with all the appropriate credentials.”
The distinction is significant because working in a law firm does not, by itself, establish that someone is licensed to practice law.
Her General Counsel Role Raises More Questions
The scrutiny has also extended to Zacharia’s work at Fix California, where her LinkedIn profile lists her as general counsel from January 2024 to March 2025. A general counsel is typically an organization’s chief legal officer, often responsible for providing legal advice and representing the organization in legal matters.
One of the more unusual chapters in Zacharia’s career came earlier in 2026, when she joined the Department of Homeland Security as a spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary for public affairs.
Her tenure was brief. According to Mediaite’s account of her career, she began working at the department in February and announced her departure at the end of March. At the time, Zacharia explained that she remained committed to supporting Trump’s agenda, even though she would be doing so in a different capacity.
According to Popular Information, it remains unclear precisely what work Zacharia performed in the role and whether it involved activities that would require a license to practice law.
Her public descriptions of the position have also changed over time. Although her LinkedIn profile lists the job as ending in March 2025, archived versions of her X account show that she continued identifying herself as Fix California’s general counsel afterward.
In September 2025, her bio described her as a Fox News and Newsmax analyst, general counsel to Fix California, a lawyer, a political strategist, and a former Office of Public Affairs official. She removed the general counsel title in November 2025, then added it again in April 2026.
The title remained in her bio until July 2026. The nonprofit’s financial records add another detail. According to Fix California’s IRS filings cited by Popular Information, Zacharia did not receive a salary from the organization in 2024, but she was paid $27,367 in fundraising commissions.
The organization’s 2025 report had not yet been filed at the time of the investigation. Neither Fix California nor Zhong Lun responded to requests for comment, according to The Washington Post.
Her Claims About Work With the World Bank Also Face Scrutiny
Zacharia’s professional history in China has raised a separate question about how she described her international legal experience. After graduating from Pepperdine in 2011, she moved to China and joined Zhong Lun’s international practice team.
Working at a law firm abroad is possible for a law school graduate who has not been admitted to a U.S. state bar, depending on the nature of the work. However, Zacharia has also described herself as outside counsel to the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group.
“I was the outside counsel to the IFC and the World Bank,” she said during an appearance on the Buck Sexton Show on February 28, 2025. “It was an interesting and exciting experience.”
She repeated the description on other occasions, and it appeared in her biography for the California Globe, where she previously worked as a columnist.
Yet a June 2026 press release announcing her appointment to the mineral exploration company NovaRed used narrower wording, describing her experience as work on “matters involving organizations associated with” the World Bank Group and the IFC.
That description does not establish that she served as outside counsel to either organization. The available accounts leave questions about the exact nature and scope of her work, adding another layer to the scrutiny surrounding her résumé.
Old Social Media Posts Draw Fresh Attention
Questions about Zacharia’s professional background are not the only aspect of her past attracting attention. A review by CNN’s KFile found that she had shared posts containing unverified claims and conspiracy theories about public figures, celebrities, and influential groups.
Many of the posts date back to 2022, several years before her appointment as White House press secretary. While some posts on X have since been deleted, others shared on Truth Social remain publicly available.
One topic that appeared repeatedly was Pizzagate, a conspiracy theory that falsely alleged a child-trafficking network involving prominent Democrats and a Washington, D.C., restaurant.
In September 2022, Zacharia shared a post about longtime Democratic political operative John Podesta. Days later, she tagged Fox News host Sean Hannity and Trump in another post, asking why Fox News had not featured Podesta in a report about the allegations against him.
The claims were unsupported and stemmed from conspiracy theories that circulated during the 2016 presidential election. Those theories falsely linked emails belonging to Podesta to alleged criminal activity at Comet Ping Pong, a restaurant in Washington. The allegations were widely discredited, but the controversy extended beyond social media.
Zacharia’s posts also touched on the entertainment industry. In September 2022, she responded to a Variety article about Timothée Chalamet receiving a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival for his role in Bones and All. CNN’s review also identified posts in which Zacharia shared claims about international affairs and prominent political figures.
Other Posts Referenced International Affairs and Public Figures
In February 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zacharia reportedly reposted a message suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin was confronting a secret network of powerful individuals.
The accompanying image featured several well-known figures, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and billionaire George Soros. Zacharia also reportedly shared a post by Ali Alexander, who helped organize the Stop the Steal movement following Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election.
Another example cited in CNN’s review involved comedian Joan Rivers and former first lady Michelle Obama.
A Post About Joan Rivers Also Attracted Attention
In July 2022, Zacharia reposted a claim on Truth Social suggesting that Joan Rivers had died shortly after making remarks about Barack and Michelle Obama. The post implied a connection between Rivers’ death and remarks attributed to her about the Obamas, but provided no evidence supporting that suggestion.
It was among several posts CNN highlighted when examining Zacharia’s earlier social media activity. Her online history also included commentary about the Jeffrey Epstein case, immigration policy, and the direction of the Trump administration before she joined its communications team.
As Zacharia settles into her new position, attention remains on both her professional background and the public statements she made before joining the White House press team.
For now, Zacharia has emphasized her commitment to communicating Trump’s agenda, while the White House has defended her qualifications for the position. Whether she can put the questions about her résumé and her online past behind her may become one of the defining challenges of her early tenure.
While Zacharia’s appointment as White House press secretary has drawn attention to her political background, her life outside politics offers another side of the story. She has been married to Tyler Zacharia for approximately 15 years, and together they have four children while pursuing careers in politics and the film industry.
She Is a Mother of Four and Has Been Married for 15 Years
The couple has been married for approximately 15 years, according to her IMDb biography. Tyler works in the film industry, giving the family a connection to Hollywood that is quite different from Zacharia’s political career.
Zacharia has described the challenges of keeping her children out of the intense attention that can accompany political work. Her comments suggest that, despite her public-facing career, she tries to maintain a boundary between her professional commitments and her children’s lives.
In a family-focused Instagram post, she reflected on the pressure associated with being connected to politics while celebrating her husband’s work in film.
“Being in the world of politics, whether directly or adjacent, is BRUTAL…and I personally take DAILY heat for it. I try to keep my family away from the flame. However, this year I’m particularly proud of my husband, who made David, Brink of War, Young Washington, and many other great movies for @angel.”
“Our four kids get to be front and center of the family-friendly films, and they are our WHY. Different lanes, but God, Country, Family, and, as our kids know, in CA, we proudly support President Trump,” the post continued.
Her words offered a glimpse into how the family approaches their different professional worlds. While Zacharia works in politics and public communications, Tyler’s career is tied to film production, and their children remain central to how she describes their priorities.
Her Husband’s Film Career Has Its Own Hollywood Story
Tyler’s work in film is not simply a side note to Zacharia’s political career. His professional path includes involvement in projects that brought him into contact with major names in the entertainment industry.
A Pepperdine Magazine feature about the film Silence described how Tyler, who had previously worked in global emerging-markets investments, became involved in film financing after returning from an extended trip around the world with Zacharia.
The couple had spent eight months backpacking across the globe. They were in Indonesia and about a week away from returning to the United States when Tyler received a call about a possible opportunity to manage a new film fund. “I said I don’t know a thing about investing in films, but I have always loved movies, so I’d give it a shot,” Tyler said in the magazine feature.
The opportunity eventually led him into the business side of Martin Scorsese’s Silence, a film that had spent years in development. What began as a financial investment grew into a more hands-on role involving production issues, distribution arrangements, actors’ agents, and budget questions.
“I went from being a financial participant to all of a sudden dealing with actors’ agents, distribution deals, and budget questions … that was a learning curve!” Tyler said. He added that his previous investment experience helped with the business side of filmmaking, while Scorsese and his team handled the creative work.
That earlier chapter provides an unexpected detail about the couple’s lives before Zacharia became a regular face in political media. Their story includes international travel, a career change into film production, and the experience of building separate professional identities.
Zacharia’s Own Views Have Drawn Attention Beyond Washington
Zacharia has been open about her conservative beliefs, including her support for Trump while living in California, a state where conservative politicians often face a different political environment from their counterparts in many Republican-led states.
In a February 2026 opinion piece for the New York Post, titled “My gym caved to anti-MAGA bullies“, she described herself as a “native Californian and lifelong conservative.”
The article discussed a dispute involving her gym and her decision to wear a pro-Trump hat. Zacharia characterized the reaction to her political expression as an “unhinged” meltdown, presenting the incident as an example of the pressure she said she faced for her views.
Her political identity has also been part of her television commentary and social media activity. Trump’s announcement highlighted that support, describing her as a loyal supporter who had been involved in his campaigns from the beginning.
The role of press secretary will place those political commitments alongside the practical demands of speaking for the administration. Zacharia will be expected to explain the president’s decisions, respond to questions, and navigate exchanges with journalists who may challenge the administration’s positions.
Social Media Has Already Started Comparing Her With Karoline Leavitt
Zacharia’s appointment quickly prompted reactions online, with some commenters focusing on her appearance and others comparing her with the woman she is replacing. One Instagram commenter said, “Gotta say no one can replace Karoline. Also looks a bit like Susan Dell..Just saying…”
Another reacted to the appointment by remarking, “Wow, another pretty blonde.” A third commenter suggested a pattern in Trump’s choice of public-facing women, writing, “Trump definitely has a type.”
The comparisons continued on Facebook, where one commenter remarked, “Switching out the Barbies I see.” Another offered a family resemblance comparison, saying, “Looks like his daughter.” One more commenter joked, “Pending approval from Melania.”
The reactions reflect the way appearances can become part of the conversation surrounding high-profile political appointments, particularly when a new figure replaces someone who has already developed a recognizable public image.
However, these comments are personal reactions from social media users, not evidence of the reasons behind Trump’s selection. His public announcement cited Zacharia’s communications experience, work at Trump Media, education, and support for his administration.
Zacharia’s new role will put her in front of cameras far more often, but the images she has shared across her professional and personal life show that her public identity extends beyond the White House.
Her professional background connects her to law, political commentary, government service, and conservative media. Her family posts, meanwhile, highlight her marriage, her four children, and her husband’s work in the film industry.
The contrast is part of what makes her appointment an interesting subject beyond the political headlines. Zacharia is moving from advising a president’s media company and appearing on television to becoming one of the administration’s most visible spokespeople.
The appointment also comes with the challenge of following Karoline Leavitt, who became closely associated with Donald Trump‘s second administration. Zacharia has publicly acknowledged that standard and said she intends to meet it.
