My Stepsister Asked Me to Do Makeup and Hairstyles for Her and Her 6 Bridesmaids on Her Wedding Day – And Then Refused to Pay

I’m 25 and work weekends as a freelance hair and makeup artist. It’s not glamorous money, but it keeps me afloat and I love seeing women feel beautiful. My stepsister, Claire, 28, has always been the “golden child.” I was the peacemaker, the responsible one, while Claire enjoyed being spoiled.

When Claire announced her wedding, she asked me to do makeup and hairstyles not just for her, but for six bridesmaids as well. I agreed, though it meant hours of unpaid labor, because she promised she’d “take care of me after.” On the big day, I worked nonstop from early morning until the ceremony. My back ached, my hands were cramping, but I pushed through because family is family.

After the wedding, when I gently asked about payment, Claire laughed. She claimed I should be “grateful” to be part of her special day, as if my time and skills were nothing more than a gift. My heart sank — I had been used again.

This time, though, I didn’t let it slide. I sent her an invoice with my usual rates for bridal packages and assistants. When she refused, I told her and the family that unless she paid, I’d be taking her to small claims court. Suddenly, her tune changed. Claire finally transferred the money, but not before calling me “selfish.”

No — I wasn’t selfish. I was done being her unpaid servant. For once, I stood up for myself, and it felt better than any thank-you she could have given.
