Olive, recently went on a family trip with her son and her daughter-in-law (DIL). After the trip, her DIL posted several photos online. Olive immediately noticed she was completely absent from every single photo, even though she knew she had been physically present in those exact moments.
When Olive eventually asked her DIL about the suspicious absence from the photos, the DIL admitted that she had deliberately used her phone’s editing tools to “crop” Olive out or entirely replace her figure with parts of the background. The DIL justified her action with a harsh explanation: “This post is just for family,” implying that Olive, the mother-in-law, was not considered true “family.” Olive managed only a tight, polite smile in response to the cruel exclusion.
The very next morning, Olive took her unexpected stand. She paid an unannounced visit to her DIL and handed her a plain envelope containing a paid receipt. The receipt was for a professional photographer whom Olive had already hired and fully booked for their next major family event or trip. Olive then looked the DIL straight in the eye and delivered her decisive ultimatum: “I booked someone for the next trip. This time, you don’t have to worry about who should or shouldn’t be in the photos, as you won’t be in charge of the pictures.”
The DIL was completely stunned, unsure whether Olive was actually joking or being serious. Olive was completely serious; she had arranged for the photographer to capture every genuine moment, with the express instruction of no edits, no filters, and ensuring everyone was included. The clear message hit its intended mark: Olive no longer trusted her DIL to truthfully or fairly tell the family’s story.
However, when Olive’s Son found out about the hiring of the professional photographer, he was not pleased with his mother’s confrontational, retaliatory action. He angrily told Olive that she had gone too far, arguing that she had publicly embarrassed his wife and made things incredibly uncomfortable for absolutely everyone in the family unit.
