After my divorce, I worked hard to give my daughter, Sadie, the life she deserved — a good home, a private education, and the dignity of having her own things. My ex remarried a woman who, despite having the qualifications to work, chose not to. She had two daughters of her own and quickly began treating Sadie like a resource to be redistributed.
It started with clothes. Sadie would return from weekends at their house wearing cheap, ill-fitting outfits. Her nicer clothes? Taken and given to Amanda’s kids.
