Spending time with my 13-year-old niece has always been a joy—we’ve shared lunches, movie nights, and moments that made me feel close to her despite her growing independence. Lately, though, I’ve been struggling with my confidence after a painful breakup. I’ve let myself go a bit, avoiding the gym and comfort-eating more than I should. So when we planned a shopping day, I was really looking forward to it.
But just before leaving, she looked at me and said, “Ew, is that your outfit? It’s sooo ugly.” Then she pointed at my arms, adding, “It doesn’t look right.” Her words stung deeply, not just because of my insecurities, but because they came from someone I love dearly. In that moment, excitement turned to hurt, and I realized how easily careless words can wound—even when they come from family.
