My name is Vanessa. I’m thirty-seven years old, and I live in Omaha, Nebraska, with my husband Derek and our two kids. “We’re barely scraping by, Vanessa,” Derek would say, tightening his jaw in that particular way that made further discussion feel pointless. “You need to be more careful.”

I cut coupons religiously, something I’d never bothered with before. I skipped my own annual doctor’s appointment in December to save the copay, telling myself it wasn’t a big deal, that I’d reschedule once things eased up.
