Donald Trump has a new woman preparing to face the White House press corps, and her background goes beyond conservative television and political circles. But it’s the details of her life away from Washington that offer a few surprises.
President Donald Trump announced his choice of a new White House press secretary on October 9, 2026, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty over who would fill the position. The appointment follows Karoline Leavitt’s departure in late August to spend more time with her young family.
Trump Announces a New Face for the White House Press Team
Leavitt’s exit left the position vacant for more than six weeks, while the administration continued to navigate political disputes, questions from reporters, and preparations for the November midterm elections.
Trump revealed his decision in a statement on Truth Social, praising his selection for her loyalty, communications experience, and support for his political movement. He also highlighted her previous work for his media company, her experience at the Department of Homeland Security, and her involvement in his political campaigns.
The president wrote that she had assisted his campaigns in key swing states, claiming that the team had won all seven states where she helped. He also expressed confidence that she would work well with the media, the American public, and his administration.
But who is the woman taking over from Leavitt, and what does her life look like away from the political spotlight?
Meet Katie Zacharia, the Attorney Who Is Stepping Into the Spotlight
The new press secretary is Katie Zacharia, an attorney, conservative political commentator, and communications adviser who has built a career spanning government service, television appearances, political advocacy, and the media business.
Before receiving her new appointment, Katie worked as a senior communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social. She began that role in June 2026, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Her professional background also includes appearances as a legal and political analyst on major news networks, including Fox News, Newsmax, One America News Network, and CNN.
Those appearances gave her experience discussing political developments in front of audiences, a skill that will be relevant in a job requiring frequent communication with reporters and the public.
Katie previously worked as a spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She has also served as general counsel for the nonprofit Fix California, an organization associated with conservative political advocacy.
Her appointment places her in a position where her legal background, experience in public communications, and familiarity with Trump’s political priorities will intersect. As press secretary, she will be expected to communicate the administration’s positions and respond to questions from the White House press corps.
Her Political Journey Began Before Trump’s Second Term
Katie’s connection to Washington did not begin with her work for Trump Media or her brief time at the Department of Homeland Security. According to Pepperdine University’s announcement of her appointment, she interned at the White House during President George W. Bush’s administration while she was studying law.
She earned an undergraduate degree in political science and government from Pepperdine University’s Seaver College before completing her law degree at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law in 2011. Her educational background helped establish the legal and political foundation for her subsequent work.
Katie has maintained ties to the university over the years. She serves on the Dean’s Council at Pepperdine Caruso Law and previously worked at Pepperdine as director of development for special projects from 2023 to 2025.
She also worked as a research assistant to Pepperdine president and CEO Jim Gash when he was a law professor. Her continued involvement with the institution has kept her connected to the university community long after graduation.
The announcement prompted a congratulatory message from Paul Caron, the dean of Pepperdine Caruso Law. In a post, he wrote, “Congratulations to Katie Zacharia on her appointment as White House press secretary. I will be praying for Katie as she takes on such an important public service role.”
She Left the Homeland Security Department After Just Weeks
One of the more unusual chapters in Katie’s career came earlier in 2026, when she joined the Department of Homeland Security as a spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary for public affairs.
Her tenure was brief. According to Mediaite’s account of her career, she began working at the department in February and announced her departure at the end of March. At the time, Katie explained that she remained committed to supporting Trump’s agenda, even though she would be doing so in a different capacity.
On X, Katie said she joined the Department of Homeland Security because she was passionate about supporting Trump’s policies to protect the country, standing up for families who have lost loved ones to crimes involving undocumented immigrants, and advocating for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel.
She added that she intended to continue supporting those causes in other roles, ending her message by expressing gratitude for Trump’s presidencies and offering blessings for the president and the United States.
Her departure also attracted speculation about the circumstances surrounding her exit. A Daily Mail report claimed that concerns about her connections to Corey Lewandowski and former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem may have played a role in the decision.
That account reported that Katie’s name appeared on a list of officials considered loyal to Noem who might face dismissal after Noem was fired. Lewandowski also left his advisory position around that period.
However, Katie disputed the reporting about the reasons for her departure. She attributed her decision to the strain that regular travel between California and Washington placed on her family, a concern she also discussed with Just the News.
In a report on her departure from DHS, she told Just News that her leaving was motivated by “the strain that regular travel to-and-from California placed on her family.” The distinction matters because the speculation about political connections was not established as the reason she left. Her own explanation centered on the demands of balancing the job with family life.
Her Next Move Was Back to Trump’s Media Company
After leaving DHS, Katie continued working within Trump’s broader political and media orbit. By June 2026, she had become a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group and Truth Social.
The position allowed her to remain involved in political communications while also appearing regularly on conservative television. She continued commenting on political issues and expressing support for the president’s agenda.
Katie also remained connected to Fix California, where she worked as general counsel and senior adviser. The organization is headed by Ric Grenell, a Trump ally who has held senior roles in the president’s political and diplomatic circles.
Her return to a communications-focused position placed her in a familiar environment when the White House press secretary vacancy opened. Trump’s announcement specifically praised her work at his media company and her involvement in his campaigns.
The move also underscores how her career has crossed several parts of the conservative political world, from government communications to television commentary and a company owned by the president.
Katie Shares Her Reaction to the Appointment
Katie responded to the announcement with a message of gratitude, describing the opportunity as one of the greatest honors of her career. In her Instagram post announcing the appointment, she thanked Trump for selecting her and emphasized her intention to communicate the administration’s achievements.
“Thank you to President Trump for the distinguished privilege of serving as White House Press Secretary. Serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honor of a lifetime. President Trump has shown America that we can be great again, and he works to effectuate that greatness every single day.”
“His confidence is a true privilege, and his leadership is a blessing to this country. The work ahead is to continue delivering strong results for our Country and communicating to the American people the major wins that this Administration is making every single day.”
“I look forward to working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country, to get that record out. Following the fabulous Karoline Leavitt is a high standard, and one worth meeting. God bless President Trump, and God bless America.”
Her message acknowledged the challenge of following Leavitt, who became a prominent defender of the president during his second term. Katie also signaled that working with reporters would be an important part of her approach to the job.
The appointment gives her a much more visible platform than her previous communications role. It also places her at the center of an administration whose statements, policy decisions, and public disputes regularly attract national attention.
She Is a Mother of Four and Has Been Married for 15 Years
Away from her professional life, Katie has spoken about the importance of her family. She and her husband, Tyler Zacharia, have four children: three boys and one girl.
The couple has been married for approximately 15 years, according to her IMDb biography. Tyler works in the film industry, giving the family a connection to Hollywood that is quite different from Katie’s political career.
Katie has described the challenges of keeping her children out of the intense attention that can accompany political work. Her comments suggest that, despite her public-facing career, she tries to maintain a boundary between her professional commitments and her children’s lives.
In a family-focused Instagram post, she reflected on the pressure associated with being connected to politics while celebrating her husband’s work in film.
“Being in the world of politics, whether directly or adjacent, is BRUTAL…and I personally take DAILY heat for it. I try to keep my family away from the flame. However, this year I’m particularly proud of my husband, who made David, Brink of War, Young Washington, and many other great movies for @angel.”
“Our four kids get to be front and center of the family-friendly films, and they are our WHY. Different lanes, but God, Country, Family, and, as our kids know, in CA, we proudly support President Trump,” the post continued.
Her words offered a glimpse into how the family approaches their different professional worlds. While Katie works in politics and public communications, Tyler’s career is tied to film production, and their children remain central to how she describes their priorities.
Her Husband’s Film Career Has Its Own Hollywood Story
Tyler’s work in film is not simply a side note to Katie’s political career. His professional path includes involvement in projects that brought him into contact with major names in the entertainment industry.
A Pepperdine Magazine feature about the film Silence described how Tyler, who had previously worked in global emerging-markets investments, became involved in film financing after returning from an extended trip around the world with Katie.
The couple had spent eight months backpacking across the globe. They were in Indonesia and about a week away from returning to the United States when Tyler received a call about a possible opportunity to manage a new film fund. “I said I don’t know a thing about investing in films, but I have always loved movies, so I’d give it a shot,” Tyler said in the magazine feature.
The opportunity eventually led him into the business side of Martin Scorsese’s Silence, a film that had spent years in development. What began as a financial investment grew into a more hands-on role involving production issues, distribution arrangements, actors’ agents, and budget questions.
“I went from being a financial participant to all of a sudden dealing with actors’ agents, distribution deals, and budget questions … that was a learning curve!” Tyler said. He added that his previous investment experience helped with the business side of filmmaking, while Scorsese and his team handled the creative work.
That earlier chapter provides an unexpected detail about the couple’s lives before Katie became a regular face in political media. Their story includes international travel, a career change into film production, and the experience of building separate professional identities.
Katie’s Own Views Have Drawn Attention Beyond Washington
Katie has been open about her conservative beliefs, including her support for Trump while living in California, a state where conservative politicians often face a different political environment from their counterparts in many Republican-led states.
In a February 2026 opinion piece for the New York Post, titled “My gym caved to anti-MAGA bullies“, she described herself as a “native Californian and lifelong conservative.”
The article discussed a dispute involving her gym and her decision to wear a pro-Trump hat. Katie characterized the reaction to her political expression as an “unhinged” meltdown, presenting the incident as an example of the pressure she said she faced for her views.
Her political identity has also been part of her television commentary and social media activity. Trump’s announcement highlighted that support, describing her as a loyal supporter who had been involved in his campaigns from the beginning.
The role of press secretary will place those political commitments alongside the practical demands of speaking for the administration. She will be expected to explain the president’s decisions, respond to questions, and navigate exchanges with journalists who may challenge the administration’s positions.
Social Media Has Already Started Comparing Her With Karoline Leavitt
Katie’s appointment quickly prompted reactions online, with some commenters focusing on her appearance and others comparing her with the woman she is replacing. One Instagram commenter said, “Gotta say no one can replace Karoline. Also looks a bit like Susan Dell..Just saying…”
Another reacted to the appointment by remarking, “Wow, another pretty blonde.” A third commenter suggested a pattern in Trump’s choice of public-facing women, writing, “Trump definitely has a type.”
The comparisons continued on Facebook, where one commenter remarked, “Switching out the Barbies I see.” Another offered a family resemblance comparison, saying, “Looks like his daughter.” One more commenter joked, “Pending approval from Melania.”
The reactions reflect the way appearances can become part of the conversation surrounding high-profile political appointments, particularly when a new figure replaces someone who has already developed a recognizable public image.
However, these comments are personal reactions from social media users, not evidence of the reasons behind Trump’s selection. His public announcement cited Katie’s communications experience, work at Trump Media, education, and support for his administration.
Katie’s new role will put her in front of cameras far more often, but the images she has shared across her professional and personal life show that her public identity extends beyond the White House.
Her professional background connects her to law, political commentary, government service, and conservative media. Her family posts, meanwhile, highlight her marriage, her four children, and her husband’s work in the film industry.
The contrast is part of what makes her appointment an interesting subject beyond the political headlines. She is moving from advising a president’s media company and appearing on television to becoming one of the administration’s most visible spokespeople.
The appointment also comes with the challenge of following Leavitt, who became closely associated with Donald Trump‘s second administration. Katie has publicly acknowledged that standard and said she intends to meet it.
